The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has mourned the passing former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari.
ECOWAS in a statement issued on Sunday by its President, Omar Touray, expressed its condolence with President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria.
Tourray hailed the late former President for his contributions to the block which, according to him, greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent.
The ECOWAS President also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased former President.
“It is with deep sorrow that the world learnt of the passing of His Excellency General Muhammadu BUHARI, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“On behalf of all the institutions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission, extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed BOLA TINUBU, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and to the entire Nigerian people.
“ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent.
“May his soul rest in paradise.” The statement read.
Buhari had on Sunday evening passed away at London hospital where he was admitted over an undisclosed ailment.
The former President’s tenure was characterized with frequent medical trips on account of his health challenge with a rumour of his death once spreading across the question with speculations of him being allegedly cloned with a Sudanese national identified Jubril as to complete his tenure.
