Ahead of the Edo Governorship Election, the Independent National National Electoral Commission (INEC) has told political parties and their candidates that ensuring peace at the upcoming election goes beyond signing the peace accord.
This was made known by INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakub, while flagging off the Peace Accord ceremony on Thursday.
While delivering his goodwill message, Mahmood urged the political parties to adhere to the provisions of the Peace Accord, stressing the irrelevance of their signature if they fail to adhere to the terms of the accord.
“I appeal to political parties and candidates to note that it is not your signature on the peace document that will guarantee peaceful election.
“It is your commitment to its implementation that is critical.
“Therefore, as you sign the peace accord, commit yourselves to the implementation of the terms of the accord and pass the message to your supporters at all levels for their compliance” Mahmood said.
While most parties have signed the accord, NPO earlier reported the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) refusal to sign the agreement.
