The Management of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) dismissed the alleged plan to carry out major power outage in Imo or any other states in the South-East.
The Group Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu and made available to newsmen on Sunday.
According to reports, the Imo State Government had made the allegation against EEDC, stressing that the company intended to cause the power outage in order to sabotage the state government’s electricity project.
As against the claim, Ezeh held that the claim is baseless and untrue.
Th EEDC Spokesperson accused the Imo government of deploying propaganda to mask its hostility against the company.
Ezeh stated: “The attention of the Management of EEDC has been drawn to a public announcement issued by the Imo Government, and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Chief Declan Emelumba.
“The announcement alleged that ‘EEDC plans massive electricity outage in Imo to sabotage the State Government’s electricity project.’
“EEDC wishes to state categorically that this allegation is baseless, unfounded, and completely devoid of truth.
“We, therefore, advise our esteemed customers in Imo and the public to disregard the claim in its entirety, as EEDC has no intention whatsoever to carry out any ‘major power outages’ in the state.
“It is unfortunate that the Imo Government has chosen the path of propaganda as a means of diverting public attention and masking its longstanding hostility toward EEDC and its operations in the state.”
He added that EEDC remained committed to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of electricity consumers.
Ezeh, however, urged the Imo Government to provide an enabling environment for licensed operators to function effectively, rather than frustrating their operations through the use of state machinery.
“It is on record that on Saturday, November 15, 2025, armed policemen, allegedly acting on the instructions of the Imo Government, stormed the Egbu Station of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
“The armed policemen forced the operator on duty, at gunpoint, to shut down all feeders.
“This action plunged customers into total darkness. What greater act of sabotage could there be?
“For the avoidance of doubt, we state as follows:
“1. There is no plan whatsoever by EEDC to carry out any major outage in Imo.
“2. EEDC is committed to serving its customers and continues to make significant investments aimed at improving supply reliability and overall service quality across the state.”
Ezeh urged all our customers in Imo to note that “if any power outage occurs from this moment onwards, the responsible party is clear.
“The State Government, having raised false alarm and made unfounded, unverified, and baseless accusations against EEDC, should be held accountable,” he stated.
The EEDC spokesperson reaffirmed the company’s dedication to its mandate and pledged to continue working diligently to ensure sustainable and improved electricity distribution to customers in Imo and the entire South-East.
Meanwhile, the Imo commissioner has reinforced the State Government’s allegation against EEDC, saying that the company planned “to disrupt the emerging Light-up Imo project championed by the state’s licensed company, Orashi Electricity Company”.
In a statement made available to the newsmen in Owerri on Sunday, Emelumba disclosed that the State Government had “credible intelligence” and “ample evidence” of this planned action.
The statement read in part: “The Imo State Government has obtained credible intelligence of plans by the management of EEDC to unleash major power outages in Imo in a bid to frustrate and sabotage the Light up Imo project which will soon provide uninterrupted light to all parts of the state.
“The government has always known that the management of EEDC will want to hold on to its current monopoly of providing erratic electricity to Imo people at exorbitant tariffs.
“The idea behind the planned massive power outage by EEDC is to turn around and blame the installation process of the Orashi Electricity Company, the state government’s licensed company, for the blackouts.”
The government further stated that EEDC had “already prepared a statement” to execute this blame-shifting strategy, aiming to “create the false impression that the company lacks the technical knowledge and capacity to function.”
The statement therefore, alerted citizens and security agencies on alleged plan “to throw the state into darkness anytime from today or tomorrow”.
