Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, has said that there is nothing that he said on his Easter message to Nigerians that should be a surprise to the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Kukah, while speaking on an Arise TV programme on Tuesday said he would not be the first Nigerian to raise issues bordering on the crisis in the country.
“Even President Muhammadu Buhari has said so,” Kukah said on Tuesday.
Kukah had taken a swipe at the government condemning the economic crisis, security challenges and other problems facing the country.
Saying that he is “political but not a politician” Kukah said for the Presidency to challenge him to drop his garb of a religious leader and take up politics shows the government has missed the points in his Easter message.
Kukah said his coming book, will show Nigerians where he stands on all issues adding that he does not play for the applause of Nigerians.
He said, “My new book, a Broken Tongues, will be out. It will illustrate some of my arguments and struggles. I m a Christian.”
The cleric said when he spoke in the United States during a conference, his interventions were misinterpreted by the Nigerian government.
He said it was wrong for government to accuse him of spilling what is happening in Nigeria to the international community adding that “The Americans know far more than what is happening in Nigeria.”
Kukah said that he regrets that some of those who took active parts in fights for democracy have themselves ended up being part of the destruction of democratic rights of Nigerians.
He said those seeking to succeed President Buhari are now interrogating the real issues properly.
He said he spoke with the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi whom he said was part of a revolutionary radio during the struggle against the military.
He said he and Fayemi laughed over the controversial Easter message adding that he told the Ekiti State Governor how he feels about he has ended up.
Accusing the Buhari administration of nepotism, Kukah said no where in the world are heads of security agencies coming from one religious or ethnic groups adding that any leader who allows that denies himself the opportunity to hear other voices.
“We are in a democracy. A lot of people making these comments don’t understand the ingredients of democracy. The facts bear me out.
“Nepotism is evil. It denies you, as a leader, the opportunity to hear other voices. All of you think the same.”
He said no leader can “satisfy everybody” adding however he needs “to give people the impression that they matter.”
He challenged the presidency to name one single thing that he said which has been out of place.
He added that the situation of Nigeria bears him out adding that Nigerians are too naïve not to challenge the administration to do the right things.
He said at the moment, many presidential aspirants are out on the same old methods of deceiving the people.
