A former presidential aide under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Doyin Okupe has died.
NPO Reports gathered that Okupe died in the early hours of Friday at an hospital in Abuja.
One of Okupe’s last public outings was when he visited President Bola Tinubu.
NPO Reports that the medical doctor turned politician had been sick for some time.
The former presidential aide was diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder.
In October 2023, he was reportedly hospitalized with prostate cancer and was flown to Israel for treatment.
However, according to report, it was learnt that his condition did not improve as he and his family expected.
Okupe, a medical doctor by training had served as a spokesman under the Obasanjo government.
He was to later join the presidential campaign team of the Labour Party’s candidate Peter Obi.
Okupe later resigned in the middle of the party’s crisis paving the way for the Emergence of Mr. Akin Oshuntokun as the new DG.
Born in March 22, 1952, Okupe was the National Publicity Secretary of National Republican Convention (NRC).
He was once detained under General Sani Abacha and subsequently disqualified from participating in United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries.
The late politician was also a governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
Oshuntokun, who succeeded Okupe as the DG of the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, while reacting to his death in a chat with the NPO Reports Friday morning, said “He would be remembered for his unique contributions to the development of Nigerian politics. May his soul rest in peace.”
