Lagos State Government has vowed to strengthen enforcement of safety protocols for heavy-duty vehicles to avoid recurrence of the tragic gas tanker explosion which occurred under the popular Otedola bridge.
NPO reported that the occured on Tuesday night when a truck conveying gas exploded, killing four people and injuring over 20 others.
Reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, held that the incident called for a stricter protocols on heavy-duty vehicles.
While expressing his condolences to victims of the explosion, Osiyemi charged all transport operators to uphold the highest safety standards and cooperate with government efforts to safeguard lives and property.
He reiterated efforts by the Ministry of Transportation in strengthening enforcement on the movement of hazardous materials and regulatory compliance.
The Commissioner expressed the state government’s commitment to a safer and more resilient transport system for all.
The statement read in party; “The Lagos State Government deeply regrets the gas tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge, which caused widespread damage and disruption.
“Our thoughts are with those affected, and we commend the swift response of emergency services working tirelessly to manage the aftermath.
“This incident reinforces the urgent need for stricter safety protocols for heavy-duty vehicles.
“The Ministry of Transportation is also intensifying enforcement on the movement of hazardous materials, strengthening regulatory compliance, and implementing enhanced safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
“We call on all transport operators to uphold the highest safety standards and cooperate with government efforts to safeguard lives and property.
“Lagos remains committed to a safer, more resilient transport system for all.”
