No fewer than 10 shops were on Monday night gutted by fire at Iya Maryam Adebara Complex in Ogunpa Market area of Ibadan.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande .
According to Akinwande, the agency’s personnel got a distress call about the fire incident through a telephone call from Baale Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal, at exactly 8:11 p.m., on Monday.
Firemen were promptly deployed to the scene of the incident.
However, ten out of the rows of shops werr already engulfed by fire as at time the fire service personnel arrived.
“Our officers swiftly got into action and prevented the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby properties while the Federal Fire Service also joined hands with us to extinguish the fire,” Akinwande said.
The chairman attributed the cause of the fire to fueling of an operating generator by one of the shop’s occupants which resulted to the fire outbreak.
He also said that no casualty was recorded during the incident, and commended police personnel from Iyaganku Police Headquarters for providing security during the incident.
