At least, four persons have been confirmed dead following a horrific fuel tanker explosion in Agbor, Delta State.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon along the old Lagos-Asaba Road, after the tanker, which was reportedly carrying petrol, lost control.
While the state government confirmed four fatalities, Delta State Police Command claimed only two lives were lost in the tragic incident.
According to reports, the explosion also caused significant damage to structures in the area, including First and Access banks situated in the area.
As seen in viral videos on social media, residents caught in the devastating inferno scampered to safety as the tanker and nearby structures were consumed by the flames.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed his grievances, saying four persons were killed while three others sustained injuries.
The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, described the incident as horrifying and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families.
This tragic incident is deeply saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read.
Also reacting was former Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who described the incident as heartbreaking.
Okowa, in a post on his X handle, expressed his condolence to the families of the victims while commending the state’s fire service and residents for extinguishing the inferno.
“I’m deeply saddened to hear about the devastating fire incident in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, caused by a fallen diesel tanker. The loss of four lives and injuries to three others is truly heartbreaking.
“On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in this incident. Our thoughts are also with the Ika South local government council, the people of Ika, and the businesses affected by this tragedy.
“I commend the intervention of the Fire Service, the good people of Ika South Local Government, and security agencies who worked tirelessly to extinguish the inferno and provide assistance to those affected. Their bravery and dedication are truly appreciated.” Okowa wrote.
