French President, Emmanuel Macron, has expressed support for stabbed author, Salman Rushdie.
Rushdie was stabbed in the neck on Friday at an event in New York and was airlifted to treatment immediately. He was said to have been injured badly.
The author, who was slammed with a fatwa by the Iranian late leader Ayatolla Khomeni, had written The Satanic Verses and was accused of denigrating Islam.
Macron, in his message on the attack in New York, said he stood by Rushdie at this time.
He said the latest development was a cowardly attack by the forces of hatred and barbarism.
“For 33 years, Salman Rushdie has embodied freedom and the fight against obscurantism. He has just been the victim of a cowardly attack by the forces of hatred and barbarism.,” Macron wrote via his twitter page.
Expressing support for the author, the French leader said “His fight is our fight, it is universal. Now more than ever, we stand his side.”
