Popular Lagos market, Alaba International Market, has been gutted by fire with goods worth billions of Naira destroyed.
The devastating incident occured on Tuesday night.
As captured in series of video shared on X, the fire outbreak engulfed rows of shops as passers by and residents watched in horror.
The cause of the inferno is however yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Lagos Fire Service had swiftly arrived at the scene of the incident as their vehicle was spotted in the video with authorities still assessing the scale of destruction.
Efforts immediately curtail the spread of the fire by the fire service proved abortive as inferno raged as two tankers deployed by the service reportedly ran out of water.
The Alaba International Market, one of Nigeria’s largest electronics and household goods hubs, has witnessed several fire incidents in recent years—raising renewed concerns about safety measures and emergency preparedness in Lagos markets.
The fire outbreak at the market is coming barely two months after similar incident occured at the Mandilas market in Lagos Island as well as the Afriland Towers Fire incident.
