There were gunshots in the Ojo area of Lagos on Thursday as men of the Nigerian Police Force made to enforce the clampdown on commercial motorcycles operators popularly called Okada.
Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced ban on Okada in five council areas of the state as first phase of a total ban in the state.
The action of the government was sequel to the killing and burning of a sound engineer in the Lekki Area of Lagos last Thursday.
NPO Reports learnt that officers from Onireke Police Station, Ojo, arrested some
Riders and impounded some commercial motorcycles on the Mile 2 – Badagry road.
The Okada riders had revolted with many of them invading the police station where some of the seized bikes were kept.
“They tried to overrun the station and release some motorcyclists arrested by police.
“Gunshots were heard ringing out in the area as police officers tried to keep them away.
“The motorcyclists retaliated by throwing stones at the officers.
“The enraged Okada riders then burnt a car tyre in the middle of the road, causing owners of vehicles to abandon their cars and flee,” the source added.
There are tension in other parts of the state where the okada riders operate and expecting the total ban.
The Governor had said his administration would not allow that mode of transportation to be used as a means of perpetuating criminality in the state .
