There is tight security in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory and in other parts of Lagos as the presidential election petition tribunal delivers its judgement today.
This is sequel to earlier warnings by security agencies that no one would be allowed to breach the peace of the country.
Specifically the Department of State Security had alerted of a plot by some people to
Cause crisis in the country using the possible verdict of the tribunal as reason.
Peter Ifunaya, spokesman of the DSS had issued a statement on Monday saying no such action would be permitted.
“Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic based associations, youth and disgruntled groups for the planned action. Meanwhile, the Service has identified the ring leaders of the plot as well as sustained monitoring around them in order to deter them from plunging the country into anarchy.
In view of this development, University Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Tertiary Institutions are advised to discourage their students from engaging in acts capable of derailing public peace. Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conducts against law and order.
While the DSS is aware of Government’s efforts and determination to resolve some of the challenges confronting the nation, it warns those desirous of subverting national security to retrace their steps. This is more so that it will not hesitate to legally come against persons and groups behind the devious plans,” Ifunaya had stated
In the same tone, the Nigerian Police Force had warned trouble makers to stay away.
Olukayode Egbetokun, Police boss had through a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the police was ready to carry out its duties of maintaining order.
It’s statement had said, “The NPF has diligently emplaced all necessary deployments and security measures during this critical period as officers and men are fully prepared to maintain order and enforce laws while respecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
Furthermore, the NPF strongly cautions all individuals, including mischief makers and political gladiators, to be cautious in their actions and statements as the Force will not condone activities capable of inciting violence or causing a descent into anarchy. The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to its duty of protecting and serving the Nigerian people and is committed to carrying out these roles with professionalism, impartiality, and utmost dedication. Together, we can ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all during this period.”
