The Lagos State House of Assembly has, on Monday, been placed under heavy security as lawmakers resume for plenary sitting amid the ongoing leadership crisis.
This is coming few days after the lawmakers appeared before a Lagos High Court sitting for the hearing of the suit filed against them by the ousted Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa.
Recall that 32 lawmakers had voted for Obasa’s impeachment in January, electing his Deputy, Mojisola Meranda, as the new Speaker.
With his impeachment carried out in absentia, Obasa’s return would spark the crisis as he rejected being impeached, insisting that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the House.
A dramatic return last week saw him took over the Assembly as he presided over the plenary with just four lawmakers in attendance.
With the pro-Meranda lawmakers reaffirming their stand with Obasa’s impeachment, the tension is expected to grow further as the lawmakers arrived the Assembly on Monday for plenary.
Meanwhile, staff of the legislative House have been directed to work from home pending the resolution of the crisis.
According to report, the directive, issued by the Acting Clerk, Mr Babatunde Ottun, was communicated in a memo to all staff in Lagos on Sunday.
The memo is titled ‘Amendment to Remote Work Schedule Arrangement’.
