An indication of huge financial crisis in the Labour Party emerged on Friday as the National Chairman of the party, Barr. Julius Abure, expressed worry over lack of funds to prosecute the presidential campaign. He said the candidate of the party, Peter Obi, does not have funds for the campaigns. This was just as he expressed confidence that Nigerians still want Obi and need a break from the old order.
While appealing to members of the party to assist in raising funds, Abure said “Our Presidential Candidate cannot fund his election alone. All of us are to make sacrifices. He did not steal from the treasury of Anambra State for the eight years he governed the state. He is not on pension in the state like governors of the parties parading selves as leaders. He left millions of dollars and billions of naira in the state’s coffers”.
The Labour Party is billed to kickoff its presidential campaign on Saturday, October 29 in Nasarawa State.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday at the official inauguration of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Abure said though the Labour Party is now the toast of every Nigerian, the greatest challenge before the party is how to fund the campaign.
Abure maintained that the Labour Party Presidential candidate stands out from among other candidates in terms of character, pedigree, intelligence and as such doesn’t have the money to fund the campaign alone.
While congratulating those who made the campaign council, the national chairman noted it was not an easy task to arrive at the list, and urged those who made the list to justify their inclusion.
