The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has said that there is no good news for who have been clamouring for an extension of the deadline for Nigerians to expend or deposit their old Naira notes. He said there have been reports that a section of Nigerians want the deadline to be extended but said the bank has no plan to extend. Emefiele said the President, Muhammadu Buhari, has made it clear that the time allocated for Nigerians to deposit their old notes have been enough for any legally acquired notes to be deposited in banks.
“I must say here unfortunately I dontt have good news for those who feel we should shift the deadline. My apologies.” Emefiele told journalists
He went on,
“The reason is because just as the President had said more than two occasions and even to people privately that hundred days is enough for anybody who has old currency to deposit in the Banks and we took every measure to ensure that all the Banks will open or remain still open to receive old naira notes.
“One hundred days we believe is more than adequate. We called on the banks we said not only are we requesting to extend your banking hours so that you can receive old currencies but we are also asking you to keep your doors open on Saturdays.
