Nigerian Activist, Aisha Yesufu, has declared her preference to spend 20 years jail term than sing the new national anthem.
Prior to the withdrawal of the controversial Counter Subversion bill disclosed by the House of Representatives yesterday, Aisha had taken to her X handle to reaffirm her decision not to recite the anthem as she chose jail term as suggested in the bill.
Aisha had posted the video, where she refused to acknowledge the new anthem at an event, with a caption labelling the anthem as ‘Tinubu’s anthem’.
“Will choose 20 years in prison than sing Tinubu’s anthem passed by slaves masquerading as lawmakers in the National Assembly” She had written.
A section of the Counter Subversion bill sponsored by the green chamber’s Speaker, Tajudeen Abass, had suggested 10 years jail term or N5 million fine to those who fail to sing the new national anthem as well as those caught destroying the Nigerian flag as seen during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
In reaction to this disclosure, the House of Representatives faced several backlash from the public which forced them to issue a statement stressing that the bill was not targeted at a particular group or individuals.
The lawmakers would however bow to the public’s pressure as NPO Reports the eventual withdrawal of the bill by the Speaker yesterday.
