The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Wisdom Onyeaju, over alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl.
This coming under the heels of a viral video made the minor’s relative who recounted how Onyeaju, an indigene of Umuekweye, Irete in Owerri-West Local Government Area of the state, had forcefully gained entry into the family’s residence and raped the girl at knife point.
In reaction to the video, the Imo Police Command effected the arrest of the suspect.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, Okoye Henry.
According to Okoye, the suspect had since been held in custody and under investiagtion.
The police further disclosed the detention of some of its officers who were alleged to have been involved in professional misconduct while handling the case.
The relative who recounted the 15-year-old girl’s ordeal n the viral video had also narrated how the detained officers had demanded N100,000 from the family before they can take up the case.
The Imo Police Command confirmed the identification and detention of the officers who are now set to be placed under orderly room trial.
The statement read; “The Imo State Police Command has arrested Wisdom Onyeaju, a 24-year-old male of Umuekweye, Irete, Owerri-West Local Government Area, in connection with an alleged case of defilement.
“The arrest followed credible information received by the Command from the family of the victim, who had earlier drawn public attention to the incident through a viral video circulating on social media.
“The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing thorough investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
“Upon conclusion of investigation, he will be arraigned in court with the appropriate charge(s).
“Furthermore, the Command has identified and detained the police officers alleged to have been involved in professional misconduct in the course of handling the case.
“An orderly room trial has been scheduled to commence on Monday, 12th January, 2026, to address the misconduct in line with extant police regulations.
“The Imo State Police Command reiterates its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability, assuring members of the public that justice will be served in this matter.”
