The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday said it is unthinkable for its chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu to be considered a potential presidential aspirant under the present dispensation.
In its reaction to widespread talks of the possibility, the commission, in a statement on behalf of the chairman described the talks as “preposterous.”
Saying boldly that “It will not happen,” the commission through a statement made available to the NPO Reports by Lawrence Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary, said “The Chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections. His constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election are onerous enough for him to even contemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality and his personal principles.”
It added that Yakubu would continue to discharge his responsibilities without affection for, or ill-will against, any political party or candidate.
