Calls for Restoration of Voters’ Confidence

The new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amuptian, has declared the commission’s integrity non-negotiable as he called for the restoration of voters’ confidence.
Amupitan made this known during his inaugural speech after formal assumption to his new role at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
Addressing officials of the commission, the INEC chairman reminded the officials of the commission’s mandate to deliver free and fair election without compromise.
This according to him can only be achieved through teamwork.
“The integrity of our election is not even something we should negotiate with.
“Also to let you know that our mandate is very clear. INEC has its constitutional responsibility and statutory mandate to deliver free, fair, credible election that reflect the will of the Nigerian people.
“To achieve this, we must work together as a team. That is why is so important for us to start our assignment with this interaction. We have to be a team player.” He said.
The INEC Chairman reiterated his call for teamwork as he harped on the need for skills and expertise in strengthening the commission.
“Some of you must have listened to my CV. I’m a Professor of Corporate Governance.
“While we look at the KPIs of individuals, we also look at the overall performance as team player which is very crucial for us.
“To achieve this, we have to work together. We need skills and expertise to strengthen our institution and improve ourselves.” Amupitan said.
Speaking on the forthcoming Anambra governorship election slated to hold in November, the INEC chairman described the election as an opportunity for the commission to demonstrate its commitment to free and fair election.
He however called for stakeholders and politicians’ cooperation with INEC while reiterating the need to tackle voters’ apathy by restoring their confidence through an election void of manipulation.
“The upcoming Anambra state governorship electoral exercise will represent a pivot opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to free and fair elections.
“The eyes of the nation are upon us, and it is our responsibility to rise to them.
“Our preparation no matter how good it may be, it is as good as the cooperation and support we receive from the stakeholders, including the politicians.
“Eyes of Nigerians are upon us. Today, I am before you and I’m emphasizing the need for us to work in unity and with that synergy and collaboration among our various units.
“The credibility of our elections is paramount, and we much ensure that all voters feel confident that their votes will count.
“Let’s restore back the confidence of every voter to address this voter apathy in Nigeria.” He said.
Meanwhile, Amupitan assured INEC officials of his commitment to the welfare.
He however charged them to be ready for work while he assures them of a conducive working condition and provision of adequate resources.
Amupitan finally expressed his delight to saddled with the responsibility of managing the affairs of the commission.
“Staff welfare is going to be my priority. It is going to be a priority because we are going to be expecting so much from you.
“I assure you that we will work assiduously and tirelessly to ensure that our working conditions are conducive, that our staff are equipped with necessary resources.
“I am excited about the journey head. Together let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly for the credibility of our elections.” He concluded.
