Affirms Suspension of Wike-Backed Faction
- Safiu Kehinde
The Court of Appeal has upheld the Federal High Court barring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
NPO Reported that the convention held last year had been subject to months-long litigation battle between the elected National Working Committee of the party led by Tanimu Turaki and the faction backed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan had in its verdict barred INEC from recongising the Turaki-led committee.
The faction had however taken the verdict to the appellate court, seeking an order of mandamus to compel the INEC to recognise the Ibadan Convention and to facilitate official party communications with the Commission.
This was however ruled out during the hearing of the case on Monday.
While this might be considered a victory to the Wike-back faction, the Appeal Court however upheld the suspension of the faction leaders including their National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and Acting National Chairman, Abudlrahman Mohammed, as well as other top officials of the faction.
This would further be confirmed in a statement issued on the PDP’s official X handle.
