Prominent Sokoto state monarch, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’adu Abubakar, has decried the spate of injustice in Nigeria, stressing that justice has become a purchasable commodity in the hand of the rich.
Sa’adu stated this during his address at the 2025 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held at International Conference Centre, Enugu on Sunday evening.
The monarch held that the poor masses are becoming victims of injustice while the elites commit crimes without being brought to book.
“Justice is increasingly becoming purchasable commodity and the poor are becoming victims of miscarriage of justice while the rich commit and walk the streets scot-free.” He said.
Sa’adu however commended the NBA for its resolution to uphold highest principles of the rule of law.
He noted that the association will solve the core crisis of governance if those in power can be held accountable under the law.
“By this theme, your resolve to stand out and tall on the scale of justice is highly commendable. In other words, you are resolving to uphold the highest principles of the rule of law precisely to ensure that everyone, including those in power are subject to and accountable under the law.
“And that the law is implied fairly and equally so that no one operated above the law. If you are able to do this, you have addressed the core crisis of governance in this country.” He said.
Recall that the conference was initially slated to hold in Port Harcourt. Rivers State.
The declaration of a state of emergency on the state by President Bola Tinubu, however led to the change of the conference venue to Enugu.
The NBA had strongly condemned the emergency rule which saw the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, suspended for six months.
