The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting artisans and their businesses, aiming to boost the state’s economic growth.
The Commissioner for Commerce, Investment, and Industry, Alh. Shehu Sagagi, stated this on Sunday during a visit to Chiromawa and Kofar Wambai in Kano Municipal.
During the visit, he inspected the operations of shoe and bag makers, as well as a traditional tannery.
Sagagi explained that Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf had directed the visit, recognising the vital role women play in the growth of the leather industry.
“The governor noticed the high number of women involved in shoe and bag making, as well as leatherworks, during his campaign visit.
“I am very impressed with what I have seen. Their products are exported to Niger, Cameroon, Chad, and Central Africa, which is highly encouraging,” he said.
Sagagi stated that the government aims to improve product quality and standards to facilitate exports to European markets.
He assured that his ministry would advise the governor on necessary support, including improved machinery, better facilities, and financial empowerment.
The commissioner also toured Majema, a traditional tannery, where he listened to the concerns of local tanners.
Artisans, including youths and women, expressed gratitude for the government’s visit and its commitment to supporting the leather industry.
A female artisan, Aisha Dauda, urged the government to provide assistance directly to artisans, as intermediaries have been withholding support.
“We truly appreciate the government’s efforts. We need financial and machinery support and hope it will come.
“But we urge the government to provide assistance directly, as representatives are not passing it down,” she said.
The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the leather industry as part of its wider economic development strategy. NAN
