The jailbreak incident at Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi state on Monday has tragically claimed the life of a Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officer attached to the facility.
This was confirmed by the NCoS Acting Comptroller General, Sly Nwakuche, following his visit to the facility.
NPO Reported that 12 inmates had in the early hours of Monday escaped from the correctional centre.
While one of the escapees was re-arrested, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tuni-Ojo, had ordered immediate probe into the incident.
The Minister also ordered the NCoS boss, to visit the facility in Kogi to evaluate the situation and commence a comprehensive audit to unravel the event.
Addressing newsmen, Nwakuche described the jailbreak as tragic as he confirmed the death of one of the correctional officers during the escape.
He also confirmed the rearrest of three out of the 12 inmates.
The NCoS boss reportedly assured the public that no effort would be spared in apprehending the remaining fugitives.
While vowing that justice would be served. Nwakuche appealed to the public to assist security agencies with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining escapees.
