A Nigerian socialpreneur, Raji Shakirat, has tackled popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Suleiman Onikijipa, over the flamboyant display at the wedding of his children.
Shakirat, in a post on her X handle on Wednesday, expressed her disappointment with the spraying of money as well as the playing of secular music at the royal wedding ceremony between the cleric’s son, Sahdalah Onikijipa, and Princess Aishat Sulu Gambari, daughter of Ilorin Emir, Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.
“If we talk now, dey go talk say we are beefing ni… A whole supposedly mufti . Issokay! May Allah grant us understanding of the deen.” Shakirat wrote.
As seen in the video clips of the wedding ceremony, the groom and son of the Grand Mufti of Ilorin sprayed wads of Naira notes on the bride as sound of Nigerian afrobeat music rented the air.
While some members of the Muslim community on X also condemned what they considered as unexpected from the children of people who are leading lights in Islam, others were indifferent about the wedding.
“I have to engaged Hajia to interpret a lot of your video about Sheikh Faruq Onikinipa and also these videos to have a proper understanding. I thought Sheikh is Mufty of Ilorin/Yoruba land and yet this is his son’s wedding? Subhana Allah” @Bello Abubakar wrote.
“It’s preferable to not concern ourselves with how anyone chooses to live their life or do their things. Our concern should be our own adherence to the Qur’ān a d Sunnah while we also preach what’s true according to the Qur’ān and Sunnah. Concerning ourselves about others will most likely lead us to sin and distract us from what matters the most, our own lives. Mufti or not, you forgot that he is also marrying the daughter of the Amīr of Muslims in Ilorin.
Like I said, it’s best to concern ourselves with our own lives and leave others with the choices they make. Allah knows best.” @IdrisAOni wrote.
