Says no Crisis in the Assembly but Minor Misunderstanding
- Safiu Kehinde
Impeached Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed claims of strain in his relationship with incumbent Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa, who had earlier sparked tension in the Assembly following his invasion of the legislative chamber, maintained that he is in good terms with Meranda and other lawmakers.
The embattled lawmaker stated this during an exclusive interview with Television Continental (TVC) o. Thursday.
Obasa reflected on his relationship with Meranda, stating that they have been together for over ten years.
“Mojisola Meranda has been my sister for over ten years now. So she remains my sister, my friend, and colleague. So nothing has changed.
“If our colleagues passed vote of confidence on her, they have done nothing wrong. Let me remind you that such has been done to me in the House of Assemble repeatedly.” He said.
Reacting to reports on the withdrawal of Meranda’s security details, Obasa said he cannot confirm the reason behind the development.
“I heard so, but I don’t know. I can’t confirm that.” He said.
Reacting to claims of his resignation as Speaker, Obasa debunked the claims, reinstating that he remains the Speaker.
He, however, said that he is not against being removed but insisted that it must be done in compliance with the provisions of the constitution.
“I’m not against removal, as they call it- impeachment. I’m not against that. We practice constitutional democracy so we should be able to respect the provisions of the democracy.
“And if you are going to remove anybody, you must comply with the provisions of the constitution.” Obasa said.
Sequel to his dramatic return to the Assembly, the impeached Speaker reportedly held the plenary session with four other lawmakers in attendance.
When asked about the number of lawmakers present at the sitting, Obasa was adamant to confirm the number.
Speaking on the division within the Lagos APC over the ongoing crisis at the Assembly, Obasa claimed there is no crisis in the Assembly but a minor misunderstanding.
He, however, maintained that the Lagos APC remain united.
“APC is one family in Lagos. We are together under same roof. I won’t say umbrella because we are not PDP. We are one and together under the Chairmanship of Cornelius Ojelabi as the State Chairman and we have our leaders and father in GAC.
“There is no crisis in the House of Assembly. You people should be careful. Minor misunderstanding is allowed. Don’t refer it as crisis.” He said.
