Lagos state government has allayed concern over the ongoing sand-filling project at the popular slum of Makoko.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, had on Wednesday taken to his X handle to explain the ongoing project.
As against the environmental concern raised by an X user over the project, Wahab explained that the project had undergone necessary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) test with findings indicating that there will be no negative impact.
The Commissioner, while addressing journalists on Seasonal Climate Prediction & Socio-Economic Implications for Lagos State earlier on Wednesday, admitted that the project was approved before his tenure and was under the Ministry of Works.
He, however, assured the EIA files will be retrieved and reviewed for continuous vigilance.
“Earlier today, while addressing journalists on Seasonal Climate Prediction & Socio-Economic Implications for Lagos State, I spoke on concerns about the sand-filling project in Makoko. It is important that we rely on facts and verified information rather than speculation.
“The project was approved before my tenure, with the necessary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) secured from the Ministry. It is also under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works. The EIA findings indicate that there is no negative impact on the environment.
“However, governance requires continuous vigilance. To ensure we are aligned for the future, I will ensure that we retrieve the EIA files for review and then instruct the drainage department to assess the stormwater discharge plan.
“Environmental sustainability is a priority, and while we trust due process, we must always double-check and stay proactive.” Wahab wrote.
Meanwhile, the X user who raised concern over sand-filling project also raised alarm over gradual expansion of the Makoko slum towards the Third Mainland Bridge.
As seen in a video post on his handle, @CharlesOfkwara1, the slum has been extended with more wooden buildings stretching towards the bridge.
