Demolishes Illegal Shops Built under High-Tension Cable
- Safiu Kehinde
Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has ordered the immediate closure of Adamo market in Ikorodu area of the state over violation of environmental laws.
The Ministry also ordered the demolition of illegal shops built directly under high-tension cables at the market.
This was disclosed in a post shared on X on Thursday by the state’s Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
According to Wahab, the market was closed on account of dangerous encroachment and violation of the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.
The Commissioner held that the market situation posed serious threat to human lives and infrastructure.
Wahab, however, urged market leaders and traders to avoid illegal constructions and respect environmental laws.
“In line with our mandate to ensure the safety of lives and adherence to environmental laws, we have commenced the removal of illegal shops built directly under high-tension cables at Adamo Market, Ikorodu.
“This dangerous encroachment not only violates the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017 but also poses a serious threat to human lives and infrastructure.
“Due to the scale of infractions discovered during our inspection, we have ordered the immediate closure of the market until further notice. Our goal is not just enforcement, but the protection of all residents.
“We urge market leaders and traders across Lagos to avoid illegal constructions and respect environmental guidelines. Safety and sustainability remain non-negotiable.” Wahab wrote.
