Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, has explained reason behind the withdrawal of escorts attached to the Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
NPO reported that Meranda’s escorts were withdrawn yesterday amid the ongoing leadership crisis in the Assembly yesterday which took another twist yesterday.
While Nigerians were still expressing shock and dismay over the removal of the escorts attached to a sitting Speaker, her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, would stage a dramatic takeover of the Assembly as he arrived with heavy security details.
The impeached Speaker reiterated that he remained the legitimate leader of the House as he held a plenary session with only four lawmakers in attendance.
Reacting to the withdrawal of Meranda’s escort during a briefing on Thursday evening, Lagos CP Jimoh explained that the development occured due to the ongoing police personal audit.
He disclosed that the escorts have been returned following their completion of their audit.
“As I speak with you, the audit of the police personnel attached to Hon. Mojisola Meranda has been completed, and the police personnel attached to her from the Lagos State Police Command have been returned to her for her protection,” the commissioner said.
He, however, dispelled the claim of withdrawal deliberately targeted at Meranda.
“It is pertinent to state that the ongoing police personnel audit has been on for several days now, and prominent personalities and individuals have been complying with the process. The exercise, once again, is not aimed or targeted at any individuals,” the commissioner told the gathering.
