The Lagos State Police Command has commenced probe of it officers caught in viral videos tear-gassing students in the Alakuko area of the state.
The officers were said to be in an unofficial vehicle storming a community in the area and allegedly assaulting one of the students.
As seen in one of the videos which showed moment other students challenged the officers over the assault on their colleague.
The officers in reaction fired three tear-gas canisters to disperse the protesting students.
However, some of the students were seen kicking the canisters back at the officers while others slowly retreated as the tear gas engulfed the air.
Reacting to the development in a statement issued on its X handle, the Lagos Police Command condemned the officers’ action while disclosing that investigation is ongoing over the incident.
According to the statement, the State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Jimoh condemned the unprofessional conduct seen in the Alakuko video, stressing that misuse of power and overzealousness by officers would not be tolerated.
The Police Commissoner also disclosed commencement of investigation over an accident in Ikorodu area of Lagos state.
He urged representatives of the victims in the Ikorodu accident to come forward with information to establish the facts and ensure justice.
