The Lagos State Police Command has debunked a recycled video of one of its officers assaulting a man inside a commercial bus.
The video posted on X on Thursday showed the officer grabbing the shirtless man’s trousers as other passengers in the bus attempted to intervene.
This sparked mixed reactions from netizens while also drawing the attention of the police command.
Commenting on the video, the Lagos police clarified that the video is an old one with the incident long addressed.
The police warned members of the public against recycling and resharing old videos, stressing that they mislead and create unnecessary tension.
‘The Command wishes to clarify that the video in question is an old one and appropriate action was taken against both parties involved at the time.
‘The Command strongly cautions members of the public against the deliberate recycling and resharing of old videos as though they were recent events.
‘Such acts are capable of misleading the public, creating unnecessary tension, and undermining public confidence.’ It said.
The police further urged social media users to always verify date and authenticity of videos before sharing.
‘Social media users are therefore urged to verify the date, context and authenticity of videos before sharing.
‘The public is reminded that responsible use of social media is a collective responsibility.’ The post read.
