There was a mild drama in the senate on Wednesday after the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, asked the newly confirmed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede not to use him (Akpabio) as an example in prosecution of corruption cases.
Olukoyede, while making his presentation during the screening session, had said “for example if we are prosecuting the Senate President,” a statement that immediately drew laughter from the lawmakers.
However, Akpabio, who would not allow the moment slip by without responding, quickly told the nominee not to use him as an example.
Akpabio said, “I’m very glad that the nominee wants to use the Senate President as an example. But Mr. nominee, leave the Senate President for now, look at this direction (pointing at the seats of opposition lawmakers).”
Mr Olukoyede, after the loud laughter, continued his speech without mentioning anyone’s name, saying
“If you are fighting corruption, you become the enemy of everybody.”
