Some residents of Edo state on Monday trooped out to protest the rising cost of living in the country. The protesters who carried various placards baring different inscriptions, said the subsidy removal policy is chocking the poor.
“FG, Reverse the fuel price,” FG, “Fix Our Refineries,” “We Say No to Constant Increase in Prices of PMS,” “Cost of Living in Nigeria is Telling on the Poor,” were some of the placards carried by the protesters. Also, the protesters, could be heard singing along with a track of the popular Afro beat singer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela was a major critic of the government using his music to attack government alleged anti-people policies until his death.
President Bola Tinubu had announced during his inaugural speech on May 29, that subsidy on petrol was gone. The announcement had triggered a wave of impacts on the economy with the increase in fuel prices causing hiccups in the economy. Just last week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited again announced another increase in the price of petrol. Many Nigerians have criticised the hikes in prices saying the policy have pushed more people into poverty.
