The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has destroyed items worth over ₦150 million confiscated from inmates in various Custodial Centers nationwide.
This is contained in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) Assistant Controller of Corrections, Mr Abubakar Umar on Thursday in Abuja.
Umar said that the prohibited items were seized over time via proactive measures and routine search of cells by officers and men of the service.
He said that the items, which included cell phones, sim cards, laptops, hard drugs, power banks and other electronic devices, were burnt at the NCoS headquarters in Abuja.
The spokesman quoted the Controller General of Corrections (CGC), Haliru Nababa as saying that the destruction of the items was in line with Sections 51 and 52 of the NCoS Standing Order.
Nababa appreciated personnel of the service for their professionalism and encouraged them to continue to rid custodial centers of contraband.
The CG stressed that searching of cells would be a continuous exercise to ensure that inmates comply with standard operating procedures while in custody.
This, he said, would give room for proper rehabilitation and reformation of inmates, so as to return them back to the society as self-sustained persons and employers of labour.
