A 43-year-old sales representative, Abilawon Seyi, on Thursday appeared before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his employer of N1.7 million.
The defendant is standing trial on a one-count charge of fraud, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between Dec. 2024 and April, at 2.00 p.m. at Ebi-Ayoni Nestle Distribution Company, Ile-Ife.
Osanyintuyi said that the defendant fraudulently converted the sum of N1,730,000 belonging to his employer to his own use.
He stated that the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
The defence counsel, Mr A.J. Awominure, urged the court to grant bail to his client, with the promise that he would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.
Magistrate Taofeek Badmus granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
Badmus also held that the sureties should present three years tax payment certificate and should be a property owner.
He therefore remanded the defendant at the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail
Badmus adjourned the case until May 29 for hearing. NAN
