Angry Nigerian students on Tuesday blocked the busy Lagos-Ibadan Highway in protests against the ongoing face off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government.
As early as 8am, some of the students had arrived at the Move area of the highway and were led by the Chairman of NANS, Ogun, Damilola Simoen.
Apart from the industrial action declared by ASUU, the students also expressed frustrations about the hardship being foisted on Nigerians by the prolonged fuel scarcity in the country.
ASUU had embarked on a one-month warning strike more than three weeks ago.
Union members are currently voting for the continuation of the strike alleging that the government is not serious about negotiations.
Accusing the government of creating situations that could lead to further hardship, Simoen said some of the students might drop out of schools to embark on illegal activities.
He said, “We will be forced to pay extra rents as most of us are staying in private hostels while some of our colleagues will be distracted, discouraged and will probably jettison schooling for illegal activities.”
For hours, many commuters were stranded on the highway as the barricade halted movements leading to a standstill.
