The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Women in Energy Oil and Gas (WEOG) have advocated for urgent decarbonization policy.
This was contained in a statement issued on NOA official X handle by its Deputy Director of Press, Paul Odeniyi, after a meeting between NOA management and a delegation from WEOG earlier today.
According to the statement, the meeting focused on balancing the nation’s reliance on crude oil with the urgent need to address climate change by promoting renewable energy.
Also discussed at the meeting is the declaration of September 3rd as National Decarbonization Day in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, stressed on need to save the environment.
On her part, WEOG Chairperson, Toyin Tijanni Yusuf, highlighted the importance of striving for zero emissions.
The statement read in part; “The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu has advocated for urgent decarbonisation policy that clearly target the need to save the environment.
“This was outcome of a meeting between NOA management and a delegation from Women in Energy, Oil, and Gas (WEOG) who are also seeking for declaration of September 3rd as National Decarbonisation Day in Nigeria.
“The meeting focused on balancing the nation’s reliance on crude oil with the urgent need to address climate change by promoting renewable energy.
“The NOA boss outlined the role of the Agency in promoting national policies pointing out the need to take alternative energy more serious in national strategic plan. For him, NOA is committed to raising awareness about these efforts and ensuring Nigerians understand the significance of Decarbonisation.
“Earlier in her speech, Mrs. Toyin Tijanni Yusuf, Chairperson of WEOG’s Secretarial Committee, highlighted the importance of striving for zero emissions using technology without demonising Nigeria’s oil sector. She said WEOG is leading initiatives like the 10-Million Project to plant 15,000 trees in each local government area and the creation of a National Decarbonisation Park.
