The Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF) has, on Thursday, congratulated former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, ahead of his 90th birthday on Oct. 19.
This was contained in a statement signed by its Chairman, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua, where the forum described Gowon as a “visionary leader” whose dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress had left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
“Gowon’s leadership played a crucial role in guiding Nigeria into a new era after the civil war, thereby, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to peace and stability.
“His legacy continues to inspire and guide our nation and we are grateful for his selfless service to Nigeria,” the group said.
Meanwhile NSF highlighted some of Gowon’s notable achievements to include the creation of 12 states in 1967, replacing the then regional arrangements.
“Others include establishing institutions like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), promoting unity and national integration among Nigerian youths.
“Gowon’s wisdom and experience continue to be a beacon of hope for our country.
“We pray that he continues to enjoy good health as his insight remains a guiding force for Nigeria’s progress,” the NSF added.
Meanwhile, the former Head of States was, last year rumoured to be dead.
This was, however, debunked by his aide, Adeyeye Ajayi, who confirmed that Gowon is very much alive.
