Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has emerged as the substantive chairman of Agege Local Government Area following the resignation of the incumbent Chairman, Tunde Azeez.
Obasa, who was elected as Vice Chairman to Azeez was, on Wednesday, confirmed as the new Agege council chairman after Azeez resigned over health concerns.
The former Chairman, who had been on medical leave shortly after he was inaugurated on July 27, 2025, formally stepped down on Wednesday over persistent health challenges.
His resignation letter was read by Adeshina Haruna, leader of the House, during the plenary at the Agege council chamber.
In the wake of Azeez’s resignation, lawmakers unanimously voted to confirm Obasa, who had been acting in the role, as substantive chairman.
Recall that Obasa had initially emerged as the Chairmanship candidate before the Lagos LG election.
His emergence was however met with strong resistance from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege.
This led to a protest in the local government area as the members rejected his candidacy of Obasa whose father was also representing the council at the state Assembly.
The protest forced Obasa to step down for Azeez while accepting to be Azeez’s Vice Chairman.
