Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate. Peter Obi has mourned the demise of his former campaign Director-General, Doyin Okupe.
NPO reported that Okupe died in the early hours of Friday at a hospital in Abuja after long battle with prostate cancer.
Recating in a post on his X handle, Obi expressed his sadness over the demise of the spokesperson to former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.
He described the late Okupe who died at the age of 72 as an active figure in the nation’s political space.
His death, according to Obi, is a profound loss to everyone.
“With great sadness this morning, I received the shocking news of the death of my dear elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe.
“On behalf of the family and the Obidient family, I sincerely mourn his passing.
“Dr. Okupe was an active figure in the nation’s political space and a man who desired a better Nigeria.
“His death is a profound loss – not only to his family and loved ones but to all of us.” Obi wrote.
Meanwhile, the former Anambra state governor urged members of the Obidient Movement and other groups to extend their prayers to the family of the deceased as he prayed to God to grant him eternnal rest.
“I would therefore like to urge members of the Obidient Movement and other groups to pray for the eternal repose of Dr. Okupe’s soul and to remember his family during these trying times.
“May God Almighty, who called him home, grant him eternal rest and grant his family, and all of us, the fortitude to bear this sad and irreplaceable loss. May God Almighty bless his family always.” Obi added.
NPO reported that Okupe, a medical doctor by training had served as a spokesman under the Obasanjo government.
He was to later join the presidential campaign team of the Labour Party’s candidate Peter Obi.
Okupe later resigned in the middle of the party’s crisis paving the way for the emergence of Mr. Akin Oshuntokun as the new DG.
