Residents of Igbeti area of Oyo State were on Sunday morning thrown into a state of panic as rock fragments from the famous Iyamapo hills broke down.
The eerie moment captured on camera and shared on X saw cracks running across a segment of the monumental hill.
In matter of seconds, the cracked segment caved in with rock fragments crashing down the slope of the hill, emanating thick white smoke in the process.
The netizen who recorded the moment had in his caption attributed the incident to the Iyamapo deity which he claimed to be angry.
“Iyamopo is angry. Pray for us. Aye to sonmo lati pare (The world is coming to an end)” he wrote.
However, some other netizens dismissed his claims, noting that the hill went through a process called weathering.
According National Geographic Society, weathering is the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of earth which can be caused by water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals and changes in temperature.
The society explained that weathering can be caused mechanically with water, temperature , and pressure serving as key agents.
It can also be caused chemically through the combination of carbon dioxide from the air or soil with water.
This produces a weak acid, called carbonic acid, that can dissolve rock.
