The Lagos State Police Command has announced the deployment of its officers across the Third Mainland bridge axis over alleged planned protests and obstruction of traffic by residents and youths of Oworonshoki community.
Oworonshoki community is the last before the Third Mainland Bridge where demolition of allegedly unapproved structures have been taking place with many concerned residents staging protests.
NPO earlier Reported that the Lagos State Government had on Saturday night again stormed the community with excavators in continuation of their demolition exercise.
The exercise which ran through the night till the early hours of Sunday had again sparked outrage from the residents who were still counting their losses from last month’s phase of the demolition.
The last month’s demolition exercise which also began at the middle of the night had led to protest by the aggrieved residents as they took to the popular bridge and obstructed traffic flow.
This had caused heavy gridlocks that left many commuters stranded for hours.
With another phase of demolition taking place over the weekend, the Lagos Police Command, in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, allayed concerns over the planned demonstrations.
Adebisi disclosed that officers have been fully deployed to the areas to ensure the safety of road users.
The Police spokesperson charged the public to go about their lawful activities without fear as she reiterated the Command’s commitment to protection of lives and properties.
The statement read; “The Lagos State Police Command is aware of information circulating regarding a planned disruption on the Third Mainland Bridge by some youths in the Oworonshoki area.
“The Command wishes to assure the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order across the state.
“Our officers are fully deployed to ensure the safety of all road users and to prevent any form of obstruction or breach of the peace.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to go about their lawful activities without fear and to cooperate with security personnel carrying out their duties.
“The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property, and to ensuring the free flow of traffic across Lagos State.”
