The Lagos State Police Command has detained Inspector Obic Modestus, the officer caught in a viral video assaulting driver of ride-hailing company, Bolt.
NPO Reported that the officer attached to the Ketu Police Division was on Sunday caught in the video shared on X physical assaulting the driver in the presence of his passengers.
The driver was dragged out of the car and subjected to further assault following his refusal to enter the waiting Police patrol van.
While the Police had since condemned the action and summoned the erring officer, the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement issued on Wednesday, disclosed that Inspector Modestus has been detained.
According to the statement, the officer was handed over to the Provost Department for detention, orderly room trial and further disciplinary action.
Hundeyin further reiterated the stance of the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, on zero-tolerance to unprofessional conduct and acts of incivility toward members of the public.
The spokesperson also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to upholding professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights and human dignity of all Lagosians.
The statement read in part; “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to a disturbing incident involving an Inspector of Police Obic Modestus, who was captured on video assaulting a taxi driver in public. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at approximately 11:40 a.m. in the Ketu area of Lagos.
“The Inspector, who is attached to the Ketu Division, has been identified and brought to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Command. He has since been handed over to the Provost Department for detention, orderly room trial and further disciplinary action in accordance with the Nigeria Police Force’s internal regulations. The outcome of the trial will certainly be made public.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on unprofessional conduct and acts of incivility toward members of the public.
“Such behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect the values and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Lagos State Police Command assures the public that thorough investigation will be carried out into the incident and appropriate disciplinary measures will be applied to ensure justice is done in the matter.
“The Command remains committed to upholding professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights and human dignity of all Lagosians
“Further updates on this matter will be communicated to the public in due course.”
