Police operatives attached to the National Assembly complex have on Tuesday tear-gassed #OccupyNASS protesters.
The protesters had earlier today stormed the National Assembly in continuation of their protest over the Electoral Act Amendment Bill despite the Senate’s reversal of its decision on the controversial rejection of a clause for the mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
NPO Reported that the Senate’s initial decision on the e-transmission of results had sparked public outrage and triggered the protest.
The red chamber eventually bowed to the pressure with its last week reversal of the decision.
This however tend not to suffice for the protesters who again on Tuesday converged at the National Assembly.
They were met with strong resistance from the police following their approach towards the legislative house’s gate.
Video shared on X showed the protesters scampering for safety as the tear-gas filled the air.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Act Amendment bill is currently subject to review by a joint committee for the harmonisation of the bill as passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The lawmakers are also billed to resume plenary session today- a development which appeared to have prompted the protesters’ resumption of their agitation.
