Breaking! Nigeria’s Foremost Theatre Director Dies

Gloom descended on the University of Ilorin on Sunday as a foremost stage director and teacher Prof Ayo Akinwale died.

Reports say that Akinwale died at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital after an undisclosed illness.

He was born in Ibadan and attended Methodist High School and the University of Ibadan before commencing academic work as a lecturer at the Polytechnic Ibadan.

Akinwale was known across Nigeria as a stage director and actor himself.

He taught many of the present day actors as a teacher at the Performing Arts Department of the University of Ilorin.

Apart from being a teacher of theatre, he had several stage and television appearances featuring in key productions.

Ladepo Omo Adanwo, Iranse Aje, Sango and many others brought out the best in Akinwale as an actor.

He won several awards among which was Best Indigenous Actor at the Africa Movie Awards.
