Barely 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu’s condolence visit, a group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) has on Thursday stormed Makurdi international market in protest over hunger, neglect, and worsening living conditions in their camp.
The protesters obstructed traffic flow as they blocked the major road near the market.
While calling for urgent government intervention over their predicament, the IDP’s alleged thay essential relief materials intended for their welfare are being diverted, including the relief supplies, food, and mattresses reportedly donated by Dr. Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre.
They accused officials overseeing camp management of hoarding and possibly diverting the donated materials.
According to report, the IDPs claimed that at least two individuals had recently died in the camp due to starvation and poor health conditions.
“There’s no food, our children are starving, we sleep on the floor, and mosquitoes are almost killing us,” a female protester said, holding up a placard.
“We are suffering, and people are dying.” she added.
They called on the Benue State Government and relevant humanitarian agencies to probe the alleged misconduct and ensure transparency in the distribution of aid.
