Rivers State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Okocha, has charged the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to resign or face impeachment by the State Assembly.
Okocha gave the charge while speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Reacting to the Fubara’s invitation of the Rivers Assembly, the APC Chairman urged the lawmakers to disregard the invitation which he described as a “Greek gift”.
NPO reported that Fubara had, yesterday, invited the Assembly, especially the 27 lawmakers reinstated by the Supreme Court’s verdict, to his office for the meeting which was slated to hold by 10am today.
As contained in the invitation letter issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo, Fubara had sought to deliberate with the Assembly on provision for a befitting space for their sittings; payment of all outstanding remunerations of the Honourable members; and the re-presentation of the 2025 budget amongst others.
The Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly, however, boycotted the invitation by governor who is currently under impeachment threat.
The Assembly had, since the reinstatement of the sacked lawmakers, invited Governor Fubara to represent the budget before it and summoned the Chairman and Commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to appear before it.
While reiterating that the Supreme Court’s judgement is sacrosanct, Okocha advised Fubara to resign, or face being impeached as he claimed the governor had violated the Supreme Court’s judgement.
“Supreme Court judgement is sacrosanct as it is. There is nothing anybody can do, you can’t add or remove.
“As a political party, we are advising the governor that there are two options available to him – resign honorably or be impeached, that’s the position of the APC today.” Okocha said.
The Rivers APC Chairman further accused Fubara of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu who attempted to resolve the crisis in the state.
“He has ran the state aground. He has disrespected Mr President and we warned him, let him resign because there is no government in Rivers State. He’s already sitting on a keg of gunpowder and a little spark it will explode,” he added.
