The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a warrant of arrest on the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), following the expiration of the72-hours invitation ultimatum.
NPO reported that the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly had initially issued a 48-hour ultimatum last week Wednesday, summoning the RSIEC Chairman over the conduct of the October 5, 2024 local government election.
The Assembly threatened to issue a warrant for his arrest if he fails to appear before the chamber.
Enebeli had, in reaction, warned the Assembly against the 48-hour ultimatum, stressing that it contradicted the principles of fair hearing enshrined in the Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 1999.
The Assembly would, on Friday, extend the ultimatum to 72- hour.
However, Enebeli’s absence at the Assembly’s plenary today led to the issuance of the arrest warrant by the lawmakers.
Meanwhile, the RSIEC Chairman had fixed August 9, 2025, to conduct a fresh Local Government (LG) poll in the state following a Supreme Court verdict that annulled the October 5, 2024 local government poll conducted in the state.
