Amidst the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, the governor, Siminalayi Fubara has vowed to restore peace and ensure that supporters are duly protected.
He stated this while addressing pressmen on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.
Recall that NPO made reports that there was confusion as many chairmen of the 18 local government areas of the state made attempts to force their way into their offices.
Meanwhile, their offices lapsed on Monday and Governor Sim Fubara had directed that Heads of Administrations of the local council areas take over the affairs of the councils.
Reacting to this, Gov. Fubara said,
“You are all aware the tenure of the council chairman ended yesterday and today we have ordered the head of local governments to be in charge while we wait for further directives.
“It is very unfortunate that we started hearing of disturbing news from some LGAs of the invasion of council secretariats and it’s really unfortunate so we have called a security council meeting so that the needful will be done.”
Fubara established alleged plans of opponents to arrest his supporters and disrupt the peace of the state, which he has therefore vowed to ensure their maximum protection.
“We are also aware that our enemy is also planning a lot of things but we will not fall into that plot while we allow them to destroy the peace that we are enjoying in the state.
“I am also aware that there is a ground plan to come and arrest some of our supporters, this time around you have to pass through me to arrest them because I don’t think there is anything that any of these people following us have done rather than stand on the side of truth if it will cost us our life to stand on the part of the truth, we will do that.
He further affirmed that as far as the law stands, there will be no extension of tenure.
“The law is the law, it has said there is no extension of tenure and whoever is assuring anybody anywhere of whatever
“I advise them because peace is what we need in this state. I assure everyone I will do whatever it takes to maintain peace and order in this state.”
