Nigeria’s advocacy group Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project on Thursday hinted of its plan to drag to court the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
SERAP said it has concluded plans to sue Akpabio over his public announcement of ‘tokens’ for members of the Upper chamber of the National Assembly to enjoy their holidays.
The organization, known for its anti corruption campaigns and weekly challenges to authorities via many court actions, said this via its X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
“We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,” SERAP said in its tweet.
Akpabio had drawn the anger of many Nigeria on Tuesday when he made the statement.
The Senate President who had forgotten he was on a live television said tokens had been sent to senators’ accounts to enable them enjoy their holiday and return to the Senate safely.
Realising he had made a mistake, Akpabio said he was withdrawing the statement.
He then modified the statement by saying the Senate President had sent prayers into the mail boxes of the senators.
He has received wide condemnations for the statement.
A former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressive Congress Timi Frank on Wednesday called for Akpabio to resign.
