Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project Group has demanded probe of lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh, by the Nigerian Police Force and the House of Representatives over assault of a Bolt driver.
The Humanitarian group made the demand in a post on their X handle on Monday in reaction to a video which surfaced online showing the Ikwechegh physically assaulting the driver.
SERAP called for an end to impunity and violation of citizens’ rights as they demand accountability and justice for the victim.
“The Nigerian police and Speaker, House of Reps must immediately investigate reports that Mr Alex Ikwechegh, a lawmaker brutally assaulted a Bolt driver, and ensure accountability and justice for the violations. Impunity for violations of citizens’ rights MUST STOP.” the group wrote.
NPO earlier reported the incident which was posted on X.
The APGA lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency had threatened to beat up the Bolt driver identified as Stephen Abuwatseya.
He would advanced to physically assaulting him as captured in the video when the driver demanded for his delivery fee.
“Do you know who I am? I can make this man (driver) disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen. Can you imagine this rat? I am not going to give this boy one naira of my money.
“I am not going to call my policemen to beat you up, I will do that myself. I will show that I am a big brother to you, tie you up, lie you down and put you in my generator house. Do you know where you are? Because you saw me sitting outside here. Look at this monkey.”
“Do you know who I am I just slapped you and there’s nothing you will do. My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, tell them (public) I slapped you. Call the Inspector General of Police that I slapped you, let him come. Record me very well,” he boasted.
